Mobeus realised its investment in Monsal in a sale to the General Electric Company.
Monsal, based in Mansfield, is one of the UK’s leading Anaerobic Digestion (“AD”) and biogas to energy businesses.
Mobeus backed the MBO of Monsal in December 2007, buying the business from founder shareholders. At the time the business was well established in the water industry and was starting to develop an offering for the nascent ‘energy from waste’ sector.
Monsal has emerged as a leading provider of AD technology and has a number of reference sites in operation. However, getting there was not easy, not least because of the economic environment. Mobeus provided significant support to the business and invested additional capital in two rounds of funding in 2009 and 2011.
In June 2014, Monsal was sold to the General Electric Company following a strategic approach, in a transaction valuing the business at c. £15 million.
The disposal generated a 1.9x cash return to the Mobeus advised VCTs. Given the challenges the business faced at times, and the additional support required, this was a particularly satisfying result.
